Answering The Overused Question - What Is PR?
If you have ever worked in Public Relations, then you understand the annoyance that tags along with the reoccurring question, "so what is public relations anyway?" Many still have this idea that the PR department spends its days typing away press releases and tangled up in phone cords contacting press. There is oh-so-much more to being in public relations.
First, let us start with the dictionary definition, courtesy of dictionary.com;

1. The practice of creating, promoting, or maintaining goodwill and a favorable image among the public towards an institution, public body
2. The condition of the relationship between an organization and the public
3. The professional staff employed to create, promote, or maintain a favorable relationship between an organization and the public
So a few points before I get into my personal definition. Public relations is about creating an image and a relationship between a company and the public. The PR team creates and maintains this image and relationship through different avenues. Now let's delve into my own short-&-sweet explanation. Public relations is first about creating and maintaing a consistent image. The next step is to develop a relationship with your customer base. Interaction is very important, people need to feel special, and involved. Public relations is also creating brand awareness. You want your brand to have a positive cohesive image and the PR team achieves this.
