Summer in New York can get hot, sticky, and smelly. Some people get to jet away to a cooler climate or escape to tropical paradise while others sweat it out (literally) in the city. Summer doesn't have to be unbearable, it actually can be quite fun. While you scroll through your Instagram dash filled with beach pictures and smoothies take a second to remember you're spending your summer in the greatest city on Earth (well according to me). When you get those flying-down-to-paradise snapchats don't forget thousands would kill to spend a summer in New York, so enjoy it.
I advise to wear light and breathable fabrics, this is not the time or place to show off that knit top you just scored from Buffalo Exchange. Under no circumstances should you wear silk underthings (trust me on this one it gets gross). Make sure you drink plenty of water and wear facial sunscreen, no one wants to turn into a lobster face. Take advantage of all the outdoor activities, there is swing dancing outside at night hosted by Lincoln center, there are free movies, and festivals. Read about these in my NYC todo posts. All you have to do is google free things to do in New York City and BAM a whole magical calendar appears before you. Above all else, enjoy the time you have, because the heat won't be here for long and when the cold comes, oh-boy will you miss these sweaty days.
In addition to my own tips I asked some true New Yorkers to give me their advice on how to make a summer in NYC bearable & here's what they said:
"Find a rooftop to tan with a cool drink and invest in a fan." - Gavrielle
"Master a top knot because it's so humid [even] your hair will sweat." - Nikki
"Don't go on the subway, it's as hot as Africa." - John
"Leave during the week and come back on weekends." - Hellen
"Water, Water and more Water" - Bill
"Order groceries to be delivered & get out to the beach" - Lindsay
"Better have a cool air conditioner or else you're FUCKED." - Fiona
"Realizing that your fire escape is a beautiful balcony for tanning even if your landlord tries to tell you it isn't." - Bridget
"Any sort of iced coffee in the morning, or take a Long Island weekend vacation." - James
"Keep occupied. Seize the summer while you can." - Sarah
Stay Cool Loves. xoxo
