I want all of you to close your eyes for a second and think back to those early days of Facebook or even (Gasp!) Myspace. This is a time before Twitter & Instagram. A time when we all tried (some more than others) to cultivate "friends" on these platforms. Whoever had more friends was obviously more liked in our minds. This was the birth of a new way of thinking, where an amount of likes turned into self confidence and people spent their days thinking of witty and fun statuses.
Working in PR and social media I am constantly measuring a campaigns success based on social media. However that doesn't mean people should measure their own worth based on Facebook friends. It's easy to get caught up in how many likes another girl got and the fact that random guy always has a funny status.
You are not a PR campaign so don't treat yourself like one.
Now we are all bombarded by several social media platforms and the lines are sometimes blurred between followers and friends. I think it's really important to remember the people who are closest to you, who would be there with or without 140 characters and some witty hashtags. These are your true friends. Value them. It's extremely important today to have a presence on social media. However, put your real friends first and the funny posts will soon follow.
