Bring me to a bookstore, and you lose your whole day. I love scouring through the shelves of books, searching for that special find that will catch your eye and your imagination. Reference books hold a special place on my shelf. Coffee table books, designer reference books, architecture books, and everything in between, are welcome on my coffee table and my shelves. I love to spend a Sunday afternoon flipping through the glossy pages drinking a cup of coffee. It's both relaxing and gives me a wave of inspiration. It's almost an exercise for my eyes at times.
Being in public relations I find having reference books on hand even more helpful. Being able to slip through creativity, spaces and ideas allows your mind to feed off of the pages. Need to come up with a new campaign? Flip through a book, allow your mind to wander and trust me you will think of a whole notebook full of ideas. Hosting a press event? Check through for decoration, placement, and color ideas. These books go way beyond the simple titles like ,"Shoes, Shoes, Shoes" or "Vintage Windows." You are not simply looking at shoes or windows, rather creativity and fresh ideas.
Allowing the mind to wander is important for PR professionals. Give yourself the opportunity to be creative and crack open a book. The ones shown above are; Savage Beauty, a collection of Alexander McQueen's designs, Any Warhol, examples of his work with notations, & Rediscovered Treasures a guide to give new life to old pieces. Take advantage of these tools, and even look through your own work. Decide what you like and don't like about what you did and use that to your advantage in the future.
Happy Reading. Xoxo
