Last night I met with the fabulous ladies in charge of next years NAHS chapter at my old high school. NAHS, for those who may not be familiar stands for National Art Honor Society. Two years ago I was elected the Chapter President, the same year it was cut from the budget. I managed to keep it going with help from my volunteer advisor and I am so proud of how active it has become & it's potential for the year ahead. I met with the officers to talk about ideas for the upcoming year, planning and general advice. I by no means am an expert, but I do have a lot of experience in planning and organization regarding societies.
After the meeting I started thinking about the power of sitting down with someone who has been in your shoes. I've interviewed FIT Alumni, talked with Professors and have really learned a lot. Success isn't about doing everything completely by yourself. I used to think being successful was all about doing everything alone, flying solo. I was far from correct. As I get older and experience more, I see how success is not a one man show. Consulting others is a valuable tool that more students should take advantage of. You can brainstorm ideas, talk about your concerns or ask about the unknown. After these talks, you will feel refreshed, reassured and more progressive.
So pick up the phone, or write an email. Have a cup of coffee with someone you look up to. Consult one of your professors about your career path. Ask about their experiences, and challenges. You might just learn a trick or two along the way. Plus any excuse for a cup of coffee is fine by me.
Happy Consulting. xoxo
