Something I've definitely learned in the past year is how to act and even think in uncomfortable situations. Now these situations aren't necessarily bad ones, they may just be unfamiliar. The ability to interact and function in these types of scenarios is a key tool in PR. You will not always be the most informed, or the most experienced person in the room but that doesn't mean you still can't stand out. Now some of you might remember the whole think-of-everyone-in-their-underwear mantra, instead just think of them as people, because surprise that's what they are. In most cases they were once in your shoes too and they can probably offer good advice or even a different perspective.
This past year I attended two PRSSA conferences, one in Boston and the other in Charleston South Carolina. I had never before been in such a business setting with so many interesting and intelligent people. Intimidating at first yes, but the challenge became a valuable experience. By challenging ourselves and pushing our horizons we stay sharp. So go out there and face the intimating feats of professionalism.
